RESPONSIVE READING
CALLED TO PEACE, NOT ABUSE
GOD calls us to live in peace, reflect GOD’s character, and build homes marked by safety, compassion, and love. Yet abuse, whether physical, emotional, verbal, or spiritual, violates GOD’s design and destroys the peace GOD commands.
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of GOD” (Matthew 5:9).
GOD condemns all violence against another person and never blesses harm done in GOD's Name, nor does GOD excuse unkindness or meanness done behind closed doors.
“The LORD examines the righteous, but the wicked - those who love violence – GOD hates with a passion” (Psalm 11:5).
GOD calls us to treat one another with gentleness, patience, and honor. Abuse replaces gentleness with fear, patience with intimidation, and honor with humiliation.
“Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, and slander be put away from you … and be kind to one another, tenderhearted” (Ephesians 4:31-32).
Abuse destroys the peace GOD intends for the home. It breaks trust, wounds the heart, and violates the love Christ commands.
“Let the peace of Christ rule in our hearts” (Colossians 3:15).
GOD, who defends the oppressed and hears the cries of the harmed, stands with the wounded and calls us to do likewise.
“The LORD is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble” (Psalm 9:9).
May GOD strengthen every survivor, confront every abuser, and empower the Church, built by Christ, to be a place of refuge, restoration, and peace.
ALL TOGETHER:
Dear GOD, help us reject all forms of abuse and become agents of healing, justice, and compassion.
